The acquisition, restoration and release from Bulgarian citizenship shall be carried out upon an application by the interested person, personally filed with the Ministry of Justice or with diplomatic or consular mission of the Republic of Bulgaria abroad.
The application shall be filed based on an advance booking of a date and time via the website of the Ministry of Justice.
Upon submission of the application, an interview is held with the applicant if all necessary documents as per the present list have been provided.
The interview is conducted in Bulgarian by officials, designated by the Minister of Justice, following an approved questionnaire.
An expert check for the compliance of documents with the requirements of law is carried out in 14-days from the submission of the application and conduct of the interview. If non-compliance is found, the applicant shall be noted, via message publication in the Directorate’s automated information system, to remedy the irregularities in term of two months.
The documents provided by the interested parties, depending on the foreign state they originate from, need to meet the requirements of the respective provisions of the bilateral international treaties or the Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents to which the Republic of Bulgaria is a party or the Regulations on Legalisation, Certification and Translation of Documents and Other Papers, and to be accompanied by translations in Bulgarian which are to be made and certified following the procedure laid down in the Regulations.
Visiting hours: to apply for the acquisition, release or restoration of Bulgarian citizenship and for the conduct of interview – every working day from 9.00 to 12.30 and from 13.30 to 17.30.
The Bulgarian Citizenship Directorate does not provide the service of consultations in verbal form or information by telephone, as the Bulgarian citizenship procedure contains personal data that may not be provided under the Personal Data Protection Act.
